6th grade summer reading
6th grade summer reading
Dear Parents,
It’s time again to think about Summer Reading! I am very excited about next year’s Reading classes. I hope to try new things, and further enhance others to give your child the best possible experience in Reading. In an effort to get your child excited about reading, I have decided to continue using the project based reading assessments that I used this year. I want the kids to read for enjoyment, instead of points or rewards. Next year, we are going to study the different genres of books instead of focusing what particular book we are reading. To peak your child’s interest in reading, they will have options in what they choose to read over the summer and throughout the year. After much thought and discussion, I would like each child to read TWO books from the suggested list and complete TWO projects over the summer. I have enclosed the list of suggested books, the project that your child is to complete before returning to school next fall, and the guidelines for completing 6th grade summer reading. This project is a bookmark that will be laminated and kept for your child’s use next year. On the back, your child will complete a 10-15 sentence summary of the book. I have submitted the sixth grade reading list to Books-A-Million in Rivergate and Mt. Juliet, and Barnes and Noble in Opry Mills and Hendersonville if you would like to purchase your own copy of the books. If you have any questions please contact me at jorr@goodpasture.org. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, and I look forward to working with your child next year!
Sincerely,
Julia Orr Dr. Dana Finch

SUMMER READING BOOKMARK DIRECTIONS
• Read two books from your suggested list of books.
• Use the enclosed bookmark template to design your bookmarks.
• Design a bookmark to include the following items:
o An illustration o The title o Author
o Summary of the novel (on the back)
• The illustration, title and author should be on one side of the bookmark. The illustration should be directly related to the novel (a key moment in the novel, for example). The title and author should be prominently written or typed on the same side as the illustration. The summary should be written or typed on one side of the bookmark and include 10-15 sentences. Please do not copy or paraphrase the back synopsis of the book. Spelling and grammar are ALWAYS important! This is the first work I will see from you at the beginning of the year, so do your best! Remember to use color in the design of your bookmark.
• Laminating in an option, not a requirement. I will laminate the projects.
• Please bring your summer reading assignment to school on the SECOND FULL DAY of School for a completed assignment.
