Curriculum

The Little Red Schoolhouse curriculum has been designed to be stimulating, enjoyable, and rewarding. It is comprehensive in scope and provides students with a strong educational foundation. Alphabet letter books are an integral part of the curriculum along with mathematical concepts and exercises. A Bible class is also taught each day.

curriculumHighlights from the Kindergarten curriculum are provided below:

August/September -- During the initial months, emphasis is placed on learning to follow directions, introduction to the handwriting process, association of letter names, sounds, and formation, picture identification and interpretation, mathematical exercises, development of manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination exercises. Children are also taught to remember and recite their address, telephone number, and birthday. Special learning units deal with the human body, farm, ocean, and Johnny Appleseed.

October -- Children learn to match capital and lower case letters. They are taught awareness of action words and association of pictures with written words. They are introduced to the concepts of spelling, singular and plural, shapes, and blending letters into words. Special learning units address fire safety, spiders, and pumpkins.

November -- In November, children are introduced to the interpretation of music, awareness of descriptive words, reading the first sentence, and association of pictures with written sentences. Special learning units focus on Indians, Pilgrims, and Thanksgiving.

December -- December is a fun filled month in which children develop reading comprehension skills, oral reading skills, and independent word attack skills. They also are introduced to the positioning concept of first and last, and the concept of verbal comparisons. They engage in more complex mathematical exercises and learn how to count by fives and tens. Special learning units spotlight Christmas and reindeer.

Christmas playJanuary -- The beginning of the new year finds children learning about punctuation, the concept of possession and retelling a story in sequence. They are introduced to the concepts of vowels and consonants and word positioning. Mathematically, they learn number recognition, counting by twos, and measurement and weight. Special learning units discuss penguins, Eskimos, and winter hibernation.

February -- February provides students with the opportunity to review all skills and concepts introduced previously. In addition, children learn to discriminate between visually similar letters and auditorially similar sounds. There is also a formal introduction to rhyming and blending of colors, and the concept of word parts or syllables. Children are also taught the value of coins. Special learning units address patriotism, dental health, and magnets.

March -- Review is again emphasized. Punctuation is discussed, highlighting the use of quotation marks. The concepts of conversation and direct quotation are introduced. Children also learn about time to the hour and numeral writing and recognition to twenty. Special learning units include weather, five senses, quilts, and Dr. Seuss.

April -- This portion of the curriculum stresses reading and answering true-false questions and riddles. Students further explore time to the hour and half hour. Review is emphasized throughout the month. Special learning units focus on space and metamorphosis.

May -- During the month of May, students continually review all skills and concepts introduced previously including all letters and math skills. In addition, children are introduced to simple fractions and counting money. Special learning units discuss dinosaurs and baseball environment.
