First Grade Overview

First grade is a very special time for children. At the beginning of the year, the children are young and dependent. They still need nurturing. However, by the end of the year, there is an amazing amount of growth which takes place. They become independent students who are excited about their accomplishments.

Children at this age are eager to learn and willing to embrace new challenges.
First grade is a pivotal year. They start with basic phonics and math and must build a good foundation for the years to come. First grade is characterized by a number of highlights including a visit to Gentry Farm during the harvest time to talk about what God has given us. The students also participate in a thorough study of Japan and Australia in the spring. Field trips that provide hands-on learning opportunities culminate each study.

Second Grade Overview

Second grade is a year characterized by confidence. Second graders really enjoy what they are doing because they believe they can do it. They become more secure in their education. The concepts they learn in second grade may not all be new, but what they do with them changes.

One of the highlights of second grade is a study of plants, animals and their habitats. We tour Edwin Warner Park with a naturalist to culminate this unit. Second grade features a study of Alaska during which children participate in making several Alaskan art projects. We also enjoy units about weather and simple machines, including a visit to the Adventure Science Center. In May, second graders pay tribute to their mothers with a program of songs and poems. Our year ends with a study of Hawaii and a class luau.

Third Grade Overview

Third grade is a challenging year which demands that children begin to assume some responsibility for their education. Third graders become more independent. The children are introduced to cursive handwriting and multiplication tables. Homework levels increase, and organizational skills must be developed. Concepts are presented in the classroom and require extra practice at home to master the skills.

A visit to the Apple Orchard is also scheduled. During the holidays, the third graders assume the starring roles in the Christmas play. The production is staged in the 1,200 seat auditorium as a part of the holiday celebrations. Later, a Spring Fling Fashion Show is held in the auditorium.

Fourth Grade Overview

Fourth grade is a pleasant age. Fourth graders see themselves as the “Big Kids,” and yet, they are still eager to please their teachers. They enjoy school and their friends. Fourth graders are fun to be around.

Highlights of the fourth grade include a study of Tennessee. The children develop a comprehensive Tennessee notebook. They learn about native Tennessee Indians, tour Tennessee sites, write and present reports about famous Tennessee places. Fourth graders also have the opportunity to serve as docents at the Hermitage. They put on costumes, memorize their lines, and conduct actual tours at the Hermitage. The fourth grade also features a Valentine’s Day program in the auditorium for family and friends.
