Fifth Grade Introduction
Fifth Grade Introduction
Entering the fifth grade may be one of the largest steps a student at Goodpasture undertakes. Students in the fifth grade begin changing classes for the first time. We have four different teachers and each specializes in a particular subject matter. This creates the opportunity for four different rotations and results in students building independence and organizational skills. The four rotations are for reading, science, math and social studies. Each homeroom teacher addresses the areas of English, Bible, and spelling. Art is incorporated in all subjects throughout the curriculum. In addition, students visit the library twice a week, enjoy music once a week, and participate in P.E. each day.
Fifth graders also have the opportunity to participate in the Fifth Grade Play. This performance takes place in Goodpasture’s 1,200 seat auditorium and is based on an original script created by our own fifth grade teaching staff. Written by Miss Vickie Newell, the script is based upon the fifth grade social studies curriculum. Every fifth grader has a speaking part, and many students audition for the leading roles. The production takes place in the Spring of each year.
Fifth graders also enjoy several field trips throughout the year including performances at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and the Nashville Children’s Theater.
Fifth graders are also eligible for Goodpasture’s Honor Roll and the Principal’s List. Both the Honor Roll and Principal’s List recognize academic excellence. Students making all A’s and B’s with the number of A’s exceeding B’s are named to the Honor Roll while students making all A’s are named to the Principal’s List. Those making all A’s are invited to a special luncheon to recognize their achievements. Fifth graders are also eligible for Outstanding Student Awards. These are given out to ten fifth grade students at an assembly each quarter, and parents, relatives, and friends are invited to attend. These awards are based on such characteristics as grades, good behavior, citizenship, and respect for others. These students epitomize what we believe to be outstanding students that conform to our principles and values.
At the end of each nine weeks, the 5th and 6th grade teachers host a reward party for all students who have shown excellent behavior throughout the quarter. The reward parties may consist of games, food, movies, and all sorts of fun.
Each fifth grade classroom is equipped with a television, video cassette recorder, computer, sink, water fountain, and student storage area.
