Sixth Grade Curriculum Highlights
Reading: Reading comprehension skills are emphasized. Students also learn poetry and how to write certain types of poems. Vocabulary is also an important part of the sixth grade reading program. Students are required to read several texts selected by the teacher throughout the school year. Students are also required to participate in the Accelerated Reader program each quarter which allows freedom to choose reading material from a book list. Current events are also incorporated on a regular basis.
Mathematics: Several topics necessary for Pre-Algebra are discussed. Geometry and measurement are also major studies. During the 2002-2003 school year the Saxon Math Program was introduced. This program allows for constant review of topics on a daily basis for the entire school year.
Science: Studies include the solar system, light, energy and machines, and a unit on systems of the human body. Several hands on experiments are conducted throughout the school year.
Social Studies: Units include the study of ancient civilizations Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Persia, Greece, and Rome. Students are required to participate in several hands-on projects which include learning centers, writing essays, making presentations, and building replicas of ancient artifacts.
Bible: Old Testament studies include Joseph, Ruth, and Daniel. New Testament studies include the life of John the Baptist and the Book of Acts. Every student is required to memorize selected Bible verses each week. Devotionals are conducted each week.
English: Parts of speech, sentence structure and composition, and written communication such as letter writing and business correspondence are all included throughout the year.
Physical Education: Students are required to participate in P.E. Games are structured to include emphasis on sportsmanship and positive attitudes.
Rotation: Students attend computer class, music, and library/study skills once each week. Basic computing and internet skills are taught in computers. The music class introduces various styles and genres along with some basic instruments. Library/study skills is structured to give students access to the media center in addition to periods of study skill instruction.
Extracurricular: Sixth graders participate in an adopt a buddy program with a local child development inner-city school. Students present gifts to preschool age buddies during Christmas. Also, the students interact with these underprivileged children at spring socials in February and May of each year.
The sixth graders attend several professional arts performances each year off campus.
