Sixth Grade Introduction

Sixth Grade Introduction

Sixth grade is a much anticipated year because this is the first time students become eligible to participate in band. Students are also eligible to participate in an after-school chorus that meets once per week.

Sixth grade students participate in the Accelerated Reader program. As a part of this program, they read a book and then take a test on the computer. The resulting exercise allows the students to earn points as a part of the program.
By sixth grade, students have acclimated to changing classes. Like the previous year, they participate in four class rotations. It is a time when students undergo a significant development of social skills.

One of the highlights of sixth grade is the students’ participation in the Caldwell Buddy Program. This program benefits underprivileged children at the inner city development and provides an invaluable learning opportunity for our students. Each sixth grader adopts a buddy at Caldwell with whom they develop a special relationship throughout the year. Goodpasture students host a Christmas party for their buddies during the holidays as well as a Valentine’s party and a spring picnic later in the year. The program provides lasting memories for both Goodpasture and Caldwell students.

At the end of each nine weeks, the 5th and 6th grade teachers host a reward party for all students who have shown excellent behavior throughout the quarter. The reward parties may consist of games, food, movies, and all sorts of fun.

Each sixth grade classroom is equipped with a television, video cassette recorder, computer, sink, water fountain, and student storage area.
